Los nematodos o gusanos redondos son la clase de parásitos más habituales del caballo. Esta clase contiene un amplio abanico de especies, y de ellas la de los pequeños estróngilos es la mas abundante en la población equina.
Resumen de todas las especies importantes en los caballos:
- Pequeños estróngilos: intestino grueso. Las larvas perforan la pared intestinal; su reaparición puede ser fatal.
- Grandes estróngilos: las larvas migran por los vasos sanguíneos de los caballos. Los adultos se encuentran en el intestino grueso.
- Oxiuros: viven en el colon. Los adultos migran hasta el recto, donde ponen los huevos.
- Grandes ascáridos: las larvas migran por el torrente circulatorio del caballo hasta el hígado y los pulmones. Los adultos se encuentran en el intestino delgado.
- Nematomorfos: localizados en el estómago.
- Gastrófilos: localizados en el estómago. Larvas en las heridas cutáneas, impiden su cicatrización: “úlceras de verano”.
- Estrogiloides intestinal: las larvas migran a través de los pulmones. Los adultos se encuentran en el intestino delgado.
- Onchocerca cervicalis: piel.
- Dictyocaulus spp.: pulmones.
